Practical considerations when compiling a bundle
A bundle is a set of documents and evidence which has been compiled in support of a party’s case. A case might have multiple bundles, each one dealing with a separate aspect, or where paper copies are being used, to avoid a single bundle becoming unwieldy. A bundle usually includes: an index page, with the case reference and setting sequential page numbers divider pages with headings identifying what is contained within that section. The purpose of a bundle is to assist the court, tribunal or panel by presenting material in an easily navigable form, which can then be referred to by the parties. As an example, to draw the panel’s attention to an expert witness report a lawyer might say: “To assist the panel, the expert report can be found in in the defence bundle number two, at page 440. I am in particular referring to the third paragraph – about half way down the page, starting ‘Having thoroughly considered the evidence…’ “ In many cases, the bundle will be prepared in digital format as a PDF, in which case the index page should be hyperlinked to the relevant elements, with bookmarks also being used to allow the user to quickly find what they are looking for.
